Dive the SS President Coolidge in Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. A World War II troop transport wreck. This is a great opportunity to dive the world-class SS President Coolidge with Vanuatu’s premier dive operation as a shore dive on the tranquil Segond Channel. The Coolidge is not just an amazing wreck dive but has formed a huge artificial reef boasting a wide variety of marine life for divers looking for more diverse marine species.
The SS President Coolidge is a popular diving spot protected by Vanuatu law and provides endless enjoyment for divers. This was a converted luxury liner that hit a mine during the war. Its dual identity means that divers see a luxury cruise liner and a military ship on a single dive. Coral grows all around the wreck and many sea creatures such as sea turtles and moray eels call the wreck home. Resting in warm, tropical waters, the SS President Coolidge is a marvellous underwater playground for any diver.
SS President Coolidge wreck is larger than the Titanic and is renowned as one of the most desirable dives in the world due to the (relatively) shallow site, easy access off the beach, the often superb visibility, the warm waters and the relatively intact ship itself. The depths involved mean that, with care and decompression stops, recreational divers can explore the wreck without the need to use specialized equipment. Divers and snorkelers can explore ship wrecks and sites like Million Dollar Point, where thousands of tons of U.S. war surplus were dumped into the ocean, as well as amazing coral reefs and blue holes joined by underground caverns. There are guns, cannons, jeeps, helmets, trucks and personal supplies left by some of the soldiers, as well as a beautiful statue of “The Lady” (a porcelain relief of a lady riding a unicorn) chandeliers and a mosaic tile fountain. The wreck is covered in coral and is the home to a plethora of sea life such including sea turtles, barracuda, lionfish, and a host of reef fish. This is definitely a dive not to be missed!
