Known simply as Santo, it’s the largest island with the second largest population. Luganville is the main town. There is not an abundance of roads on the island and much of its 4,000 square kilometres cannot be reached by road. But it does have magnificent beaches (Champagne Beach) and some marvellous wrecks and dive sites (SS Coolidge). It now has an international airport and heaps of land. Tourism is big. Golfers are well catered for. If you know the musical South Pacific, the book upon which it was based was written on Santo and you can even see the house where the French plantation owner Emile lived as he rehearsed Some Enchanted Evening.
